Hilton Head, 2016

We were really looking forward to our annual fall family trip to Hilton Head. The past couple trips we made to the Island were more business than fun as we were getting the condo ready for the rental market. And since I spent about 6 days down for the count with some terrible stomach bug last time we were there, I was especially looking forward to actually enjoying myself!

I convinced Will to hit the road on Friday and break up the trip over 2 days. Will wasn't excited about having to unpack the car twice, but I argued that it would be worth it to get to HHI on Saturday in time for lunch. It also helped that I had enough points for a cheap room just south of Atlanta at a new Hilton property. (It also really helped that our hotel room was right next to the parking lot so we were literally only steps away from the car. We packed smartly so we only had to bring in the pack-n-plays, the boys' diaper and snack bag, and a backpack for Will and me. So what could normally take 15-30 minutes to unload the car into a hotel room only took about 5-10 minutes. Score for Will. Because he's the one who gets stuck unloading the car while I wrangle wound-up babies in the hotel room.)

Cooper joined us in our bed very, very early in the morning at the hotel. The turtle kept him quiet so his brothers wouldn't also wake up and try to join us.

Will admitted that the Friday departure was well worth it when we arrived on the island and headed straight to lunch. It was a perfect day to sit outside at Skull Creek Boathouse. The boys were happy as clams to be sitting outside in the sunshine, and all 4 of my boys thoroughly enjoyed watching the big forklifts moving boats in and out of the dry dock into the marina. I write this note as documentation...Will asked me to remind him how nice it was to get to the island early on Saturday. So next year when we're hemming and hawing about whether or not we should leave early or not- the answer is yes, we should! Totally worth it to have an extra afternoon at the beach.

Normally when we go down to Hilton Head with Will's family we rent a couple condos in the same complex, but this time we found a gorgeous beach house right on the ocean that could accommodate our large group. This house was perfect- if I could recreate it here in Nashville I would in a heartbeat! The boys loved exploring all the different rooms in the house, but they especially loved the screened in porch that ran the length of the house, with perfect views of the pool and the beach. It was the safest spot for them to be since the house was definitely not baby-proofed, so we were grateful that it was warm enough that we could spend a lot of time out there.

Another favorite room was the bunk room. They enjoyed turning the lights on and off in the built in reading nooks. Unfortunately Cooper burned his fingers pretty badly when he touched the lightbulb. We didn't realize how badly the burn was until we noticed he had blisters on his fingertips a couple days later. Parent fail for sure. Thankfully, the blisters never seemed to bother him at all and he's perfectly fine now!

The next few days were great- we fell into our normal Hilton Head routine of beach and pool time, walks around the neighborhood, and dinner out with the whole group. The boys l-o-v-e spending time at the beach. The beaches on HHI are perfectly flat, which makes them perfect for 3 little toddlers who really love to run around these days. We always had lots of help on deck so each baby was free to do what he wanted on the beach. Griffin is absolutely going to be our beach bum. That kid was having the time of his life! Cooper enjoyed himself quite a bit, too. Will was all good with the beach, but was not super excited to dip his toes in the water.

One morning we went to a petting zoo in Sea Pines. As usual, our little adventurers Griffin and Cooper loved the trip, and tried to pet every animal they came in contact with. And as usual, our Mr. Worrywart Will was scared of all the animals and clung to us like his life depended on it.

By Tuesday afternoon the hurricane we had been watching became a full-fledged threat. They ordered evacuations of the island and most of the local shops, restaurants, and grocery stores were shut down and boarded up by Wednesday afternoon. The rental company called and said that they couldn't force us to leave, so we decided to stay an extra day past the evacuation order. The owner of the house also called concerned about their outdoor furniture- we assured her that we did our best to put it all in a safe spot.

On Wednesday afternoon we walked the boys to one of 2 restaurants that were still open for lunch, and then let them run off some steam at the Coligny boardwalk on the way back. It was so bizarre to have the whole boardwalk practically to ourselves. We will likely never experience that again!

We were on the road by 11:00 AM on Thursday morning, with Will's dad following behind us. We hoped that we would miss a lot of the initial evacuation rush by waiting an extra day. It served us well for leaving Hilton Head- the roads were practically empty, except for some National Guard trucks parked. Interstate 16, though, was a different story. We sat in grid-lock traffic the whole way to Atlanta. They were in the process of opening east bound 16 to west bound traffic, but we were never able to take advantage of the contraflow. It was a very, very, very long drive home. At one point I got out of our car, on the interstate, and ran back to get into Willard's truck so he could stay with us in Atlanta using the HOV lanes. It took us about 3 hours to go 70 miles from the south side to the north side of Atlanta. Three. Hours. It was a miserably long trip but the boys were total troopers. The were extremely patient and accepted my bribe offers of puffs, veggie straws, water, and apple sauce pouches with minimal complaining. We stopped for dinner around 9:30 PM, after we had cleared Atlanta's brutal traffic. After dinner the remainder of the trip was smooth sailing and we got home a full 13 hours after we left Hilton Head.

It was certainly a bummer that our annual trip was cut short due to Hurricane Matthew, but we had a good few days on the island before we evacuated. The good news is that we know we'll be back, so we have our next trip to look forward to!

Trip to the Pumpkin Patch

We took the boys to the pumpkin patch last weekend, despite the nearly 80 degree afternoon. If we wait for fall weather to show up here in Tennessee, we may never actually get out of the house to enjoy the fall activities! They were a bit too young this year to get to take part in all the fun that the farm offered, but they enjoyed seeing the animals in the petting zoo, going through the corn maze, and watching the hay ride go by. (I'm actually not sure who the bigger attraction was- the hayride itself, or all the people on the hayride who LOVED seeing the boys in their wagon! They really loved playing in the kiddie area specifically for toddlers. We are excited to take them back in a few more years when they can really get into all the other fun activities.

15 Months

Some updates on the boys at 15 months old:

• The boys are now falling pretty squarely in the center of growth charts for babies their own age. They are certainly not in the 90th percentile for any measurements, but we're no longer not even on the curve, so that's exciting!
• The 2 pound difference between Will and Griffin is especially noticeable. Griffin feels SO heavy these days!
• We discovered the other day that Griffin has 2 top molars that have popped through! 
• Will is obsessed with glasses. Their swim instructor used to let him play with her sunglasses, and since then he LOVES all glasses. He'll tap the top of his head when he's talking about them (I think that's actually the sign for hat, but we get what he means). I've been wearing my glasses pretty regularly in the past week thanks to allergies and Will has been chatting with me about them non-stop. (And all 3 love to swat them off my face!)
• I mentioned that they discovered stairs when we were at Cap and Greg's cottage in Michigan a few weeks ago. These days they are almost exclusively hiking upstairs themselves, which is pretty great for Mom and Dad! After meals or snacks, we'll let them walk over to the stairs and herd them up. They are pretty darn good climbers and can climb up the stairs quickly!

 

• We recently hung their one year photos on the hallway wall outside their bedroom. We absolutely love how well the canvases turned out! We had originally intended to hang the photos in the nursery, but we somehow underestimated how large the prints were...there was no way that the pictures could safely hang on the wall and not be grabbed by tiny fingers. So we moved the shots to the hallway, and they look great! It's maybe a touch tight, but it looks great. Will did an excellent job of hanging and spacing everything! The boys go crazy over their photos every time they pass them. And they seem to be drawn to their own photo, which is pretty funny (and pretty adorable).

• We officially have climbers on our hands. Griffin and Will are especially good at climbing on to the couch. Unfortunately they haven't mastered how to get off of the couch safely yet. We're working on teaching them to roll onto their bellies and slide down. It's a slow learning process. Griffin, especially, loves to walk the plank and has zero concerns about safety. It's pretty nerve-wracking.

• We're starting to get glimpses into the toddler stage of life when it comes to their personalities. They don't like to be told "no", they aren't always the best at sharing, and they will flail around throwing a temper tantrum when they don't get their way. They've also been perfecting their pouty faces lately. They get so sad when we talk sternly to them- it's really, really hard to keep a straight face when they look at us with overly dramatic facial expressions.
• Along with toddler life- we have had an issue with biting lately, particularly between Will and Griffin. They both bite out of frustration, and it tends to happen when they fight over the same toy. Those two are definitely the play hard, fight hard brothers. They are constantly at odds with each other, but yet they are always together. Cooper is our little Switzerland- he rarely gets caught up in the drama and will often just remove himself from the situation if he's not happy with how his brothers are acting. I wish Griffin and Will would do the same.
• The picky eating continues. Some of their previous go-to favorites are not so popular anymore, depending on the day. They still love yogurt, any and all fruit, string cheese, sweet potatoes and butternut squash. Macaroni and cheese used to be a favorite but now is hit or miss. We recently introduced them to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches- that went over very well!
• Their vocabulary and word understanding has exploded in the past couple weeks. They love, love, love books and being read to- favorite books lately are Where's My Nose, Little Blue Truck, Moo, Ba, La La La, Spookie Pookie, and Brown Bear, Brown Bear. They are also starting to follow simple instructions, like grabbing a particular book, or handing their brother something. We're working hard on the concept of sharing lately- some days they are more into the idea than others.
• They recently met their dog cousin Gus, a big old goldendoodle. Griffin and Cooper thought he was the best- they couldn't stop laughing and trying to pet him. Will was far more cautious and didn't want to be anywhere near him, though he did let me help him pet him once. Ever since then, though, they've been very into dogs. They point them out in books and on our walks. And they are saying "dog" now (or something that sounds like it).
• Some other words that they are saying lately: Mama, Dada, papa, ball, dog, hat, hi, bye, cat, and "trick or treat" (they don't actually say trick or treat, but will match the 3 syllables with their own language). Will is especially good at mimicking us. He will also say a variation of "snack pack" (another favorite food lately) and "watch"

Just Because...

I have lots of blog posts just waiting to be updated. But we were out of town on a (shortened) vacation last week, we are in the middle of changing internet providers so we have no internet (or cable!) at home for the past week, and we are nearly out of data on our cell phones. So we're pretty much off the grid these days. It's been rough (but also pretty nice, if I'm being honest!)
