4 Months Old!

A quick update on our four month olds!
Will is clearly embarrassed by this monthly photo session

Will

I think I've said this each month, but Will continues to be our happy baby. Seriously, this kid smiles and laughs all the time! He wakes up with a smile on his face and is content to chat and coo at his mobile until we get him up for his first bottle. He is probably the most vocal of the trio so far, and has started chatting with Will and me more often. He'll focus very intently on us and will mimic the noises we make. He is doing really well with keeping his head upright for long periods of time so we think he'll be ready to sit in the activity bouncer soon. We tried to put him in it yesterday, but he fell right over, so we're not quite there yet! He is using his legs more and more to try and stand up while we are holding him. He's wearing 3-6 months clothes and will probably move into 6 month pants before he outgrows the onesies and shirts. Will is a great eater, though at times he does get a little ahead of himself and chokes which scares us to death. We have continued to tandem feed Will and Griffin and lately Will has been intentionally trying to hold his own bottle. It's almost as though he gets frustrated that he has to stop eating while Will or I burp Griffin, and he's figuring out that if he can hold the bottle himself, he doesn't have to stop eating. Will has also started to try and grab for things, though he can't quite hold onto toys yet. I don't think it will be much longer until he can, though. He is not rolling over from front to back anymore during tummy time but he is getting so very close rolling from back to front. We really thought he was going to do it while we were in Hilton Head, but he hasn't quite figured it out yet!

Griffin

Griffin physically has changed the most of the three in the past month. I think it has to do with his hair- his long, fuzzy newborn hair is almost all gone and his new hair is coming in much more fine. It looks like he's had a haircut already! He has started flashing his adorable infectious, crinkly nosed smile more and more often and seems to have more interest in engaging with us. In just the past couple days he has started squealing a high pitched yell while he's playing. It's such an adorable noise and we love hearing him talk! He'll talk to us here and there, too, but he's not yet focusing on mimicking us the way that Will is. He's started sticking his tongue out and chewing on it lately, too. Griffin has found his thumb and LOVES it. Unfortunately he hasn't quite yet figured out that he controls whether or not it is in his mouth so there are still moments when he freaks out if he takes it out of his mouth himself. He always seems excited when he finds it again. Griffin continues to be our good sleeper and is the easiest/quickest to put down for naps or bedtime. He hasn't shown any interest in standing like his brothers and will seemingly go out of his way to NOT put his feet down if you hold him upright. He has great control over his head these days and can sit upright, assisted, for quite some time. Like Will, Griffin is comfortably fitting into 3-6 months clothes though the 3 month pants are starting to get a little tight around his belly. He also doesn't try to roll over during tummy time anymore but he is getting better at working to push himself up for a bit before he takes his nap instead of going straight to sleep! Griffin is also starting to show interest in holding his own bottle, though not quite with the same gusto that Will has.

Cooper

Several weeks ago Cooper started on Zantac to help with his reflux, and wow- what a difference it has made! He's a completely different baby these days, in a good way. He spits up less at meal time which means he gets to spend more time playing with his brothers on the activity mat and less time lying with his head elevated to prevent spit up. Since he can tolerate more tummy time we are hopeful that he will roll over soon. But he is fantastic at getting his head held up high while he's on his tummy! He is very sure-footed and will try to stand all the time. It wouldn't surprise me if he our first to try and pull himself up to a standing position. His personality is really starting to come out, and we definitely have a charmer on our hands! He's started cooing and talking to us, and his wide, one dimple smile is adorable. I'm so glad that we're seeing more of it lately. I wish we had put him on Zantac earlier! He's no longer taking rice cereal in his milk, and we have just started increasing his bottles by a half ounce so that he's getting the same amount as his brothers. He is wearing 3-6 month clothes, though the 3 month outfits fit him better for now. Cooper continues to be the baby that just seems to want to be near us at all times. This has been an issue at bedtime since we returned home from vacation. He cries and cries in his crib, refuses his pacifier and generally just sounds pitiful. He will suck his thumb but not with the regularity and intention that his brothers do. Boy do I wish he'd find it to help us out with sleeping at night! We each get out of bed to make several pacifier-reload trips and hold out as long as possible but for a few nights now we've broken down and moved him to his rock and play next to my side of the bed. He sleeps pretty peacefully after that. It's a habit that we need to break, and quickly but currently it helps us get more sleep so I'm OK with it. Cooper has a new nickname thanks to  his cousin Emry. She has the most adorable way of saying his name. She always says "ahhhh" before calling him Poopah. So now he is often called  "Ahhhh Poopah". I need to have Molly send me a video of her saying it. It's so cute!

Meal times are never quiet around here. We have very vocal eaters who will let us know if they are enjoying their bottle, and when they aren't happy to have their bottle taken away. Seriously, you'd think that we starve these kids the way they scream and carry on when you take their bottles away to burp them. I think we are getting closer to the teething stage as all 3 boys have started drooling more and have taken an interest in chewing on whatever is in front of them- our arms, hands, burp cloths, or their Sophie giraffe. They are getting better about grasping things like our fingers, shirts, hair, etc... but can't yet hold toys on their own. As they grow I'm starting to see similarities in terms of their looks- all three make similar facial expressions especially when they're sitting upright and looking around. We have noticed that they will stare at each other for longer periods of time though they still haven't started intentionally interacting yet. The activity mat is too small for all three of them now so we've started keeping one on a smaller mat next to our main one. They still love going on walks and now that the weather is cooler we have been able to walk with them during the day which is nice for everyone. I even ventured out with them on Sunday and took them on a walk around the neighborhood alone, wearing Cooper while I pushed the double stroller. That's a good workout! It's so much fun to see their personalities develop. This is a fun age for our trio!!

At four months old we are:
  • Eating 4-5 times a day, going anywhere from 4-9 hours between bottles
  • Sleeping through the night- 7-9 hours for Will and Griffin, a little less for Cooper
  • Pumping around 5 times a day
  • Only nursing sporadically, not daily any longer
  • Smiling, cooing, and squealing all the time
  • Sucking their thumbs more often and taking pacifiers a little less
